This is the second in a two-part series on AI.

Creating intelligent agents that learn to accomplish goals from their world experience is at the heart of the field of artificial intelligence. Like humans and animals, such agents must be able to explore their world, identify actions that lead to success, and over time become more proficient at reaching their goals. Reinforcement learning is the area of artificial intelligence research that seeks to build this kind of learning agent. Assistant Professor Josiah Hanna will describe reinforcement learning, its current use in real world applications, and on-going research in his lab at UW – Madison that aims to make reinforcement learning a broadly applicable method for creating intelligent agents in the real world.

Josiah Hanna is an assistant professor in the Computer Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin -- Madison. He received his Ph.D. in the Computer Science Department at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to attending UT Austin, he completed his B.S. in computer science and mathematics at the University of Kentucky. Before joining UW--Madison, he was a post-doc at the University of Edinburgh and also spent time at FiveAI working on autonomous driving. Hanna is a recipient of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship. His research interests lie in artificial intelligence and machine learning, seeking to develop algorithms that allow autonomous agents to learn (efficiently) from experience. In particular, Hanna studies reinforcement learning and methods to increase the data efficiency of reinforcement learning algorithms.

If you have preliminary questions for the speaker, please send to Program Coordinator Millard Susman at msusman@wisc.edu by Wednesday, November 1.
